A lesson I’ve learned the hard way

It’s more important to have a process goal that you can meet every day that is in alignment with your overarching vision

Not just in alignment with the checkbox of an end state outcome goal you’re seeking to accomplish.

Why focus on the vision and not end outcome binary [done/not-done] goal?

The end outcome is

  • a byproduct of your daily execution
  • a fact that becomes true and that’s it
  • just a moment in time

Quick story

Years ago, I was driving my dad home one afternoon and as we were pulling off the freeway here in San Diego, I realized I reached and surpassed an outcome goal a few months prior.

Though I didn’t realize it when it happened, the turning point didn’t really change my day to day (even though a lot of people claim it does).

I was still just me. And the question quickly came “ok, now what?”

Since then it’s been a long journey to realize this but:

It’s far better (and more powerful) to dictate and see the vision of what you are trying to accomplish by seeing WHO you are becoming and visualize the emotion and experience you’re going after.

This does 2 things for you

1 – it allows you to experience the feeling of the end state now (so you can be successful now)

2 – it reinvigorates and reinforces you to commit to the daily focus on your process goal

And the odd part of doing this is you’ll probably end up at or surpass your end state outcome goal anyways

But you’d do so in a more scenic route, enjoying the journey and the view.
