Activity Problems vs Strategic Problems

Most founders I talk to on sales calls have an activity problem

Sometimes that stems from lack of strategy or from following the wrong strategy

(The wrong strategies manifest in poor results or lackluster progress)

Those become great clients that I can help the most.

But if you already have a good strategy, you just need to execute more.

Let me explain

As humans we contemplate (think) before we act (behaviour)

(And yes I know, we tend go straight into activity without any thinking…but stick with me)

When I’m speaking with very smart founders, who have been in their business for nearly a decade (and sometimes more) they tend to over index in over contemplation instead of increasing activity.

Yes, markets change, buying behavior changes, and wallet share changes.

But if you haven’t over indexed in attempting new ways to solve your problem (ideally 5 to 8 different times

then you don’t have a strategy problem you have an activity problem.

A mental model I created to highlight this point is the inverse of the Fibonacci series (0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21…)

The model goes like this:

-The 1st you go to solve the problem you might do a lot of activity (21 inputs) and yet make little to no progress (output: 0)

-The 2nd time you might do slightly less activity (13 inputs) than the first for a little progress (output: 1)

-The 3rd time around, 8 inputs for 1 output

So on and so forth, until you find ‘what works’

Once you maxed out activity, and are still stuck, then we should talk.
